Introducing Movies & TV, a versatile media player by Microsoft that allows you to access all your locally hosted videos and video content purchased from the Windows Store. With its sleek Metro interface, this app seamlessly integrates into the Windows 10 environment, making it a convenient choice for media playback. However, it does come with a few drawbacks.
Slick and user-friendly, Movies & TV categorizes your media into three simple sections: TV, Movies, and Videos. These categories are displayed in the left-hand column, and clicking on any of them reveals all the related folders and media in the main window. The clear thumbnails representing each file make it easy to navigate and browse through your visual content. Additionally, a search function is available to quickly find specific movies or videos.
Playing downloaded media is a breeze with Movies & TV. In our tests, videos started instantly, providing a seamless viewing experience. However, it's worth noting that not all video formats are supported. While most common formats like M4V, MP4, MOV, ASF, AVI, WMV, M2TS, 3G2, 3GP2, and 3GPP are compatible, some formats, such as MKV, may encounter issues.
When it comes to purchased content from the Microsoft Store, Movies & TV excels at suggesting new viewing ideas. It conveniently displays movies you might be interested in and offers missing episodes or seasons of TV shows alongside your owned ones, making it easier to complete your collection.
However, one downside is that when you want to download anything, clicking on it opens the Windows Store menu. It would have been more convenient to have the store and player integrated into a single app, similar to Apple's iTunes.
Movies & TV is also lacking in customization options. While you can choose to download or stream videos in SD or HD, most settings are tied to your account, device, and purchase history. This streamlined approach may be suitable for some users, but it limits the ability to personalize your viewing experience.
Although Movies & TV is visually appealing and easy to use, it still has room for improvement. Integration with the Windows Store, more customization options, and expanded format support would elevate it to a true blockbuster media player.
